Scrapbook Series: Where To Start?

Well as you may know, I am limited to what I can do right now due to my sprained ankle. My doctor now thinks there may be potential blood clotting or a fracture. So more x-rays, a venous doppler and an ultrasound. Hopefully by the end of all these appointments I will have a better idea of what I am dealing with and how to treat it. I am in good, thorough hands now though so hopefully we can speed along this recovery! In the meantime I thought it might be useful to go over some little tips I've picked up along the way with my scrapbooking adventures... and numerous trips to Micheal's (not complaining).

When you are looking at starting a scrapbook to hold all of your precious memories and moments, the best place to start is by collecting all the supplies you need to get yourself started. I've been there, starring at the Micheal's scrapbooking section feeling a little overwhelmed and then getting home and realizing that I didn't pick up everything I needed. It also can be shocking how quickly your bill adds up. So before you go spending unnecessary money right off the hop, I'll give you the 6 key items I think are a good place to start your project.

1. Pictures

I know super obvious, right!? Of course you need to print off those photos! When I go to print off my pictures, I now always print two of each. Trust me I am saving you an unnecessary trip if you mess up. It is easy to make errors when cutting or wrinkle one by mistake. If you aren't planning on doing lots of cuts, you can also play around with colour. Maybe one in colour and one in black and white. Changing this can be an easy and simple way to add interest to a page without a lot of work. Also a cool feature Wal-Mart offers is smaller sized photos. This can be a great option if you have a lot of photos from a certain event but don't want the event to exceed 2-4 pages in your book. Definitely something to play around with the first few times to see what works for you.

2. Cutting Board

Nothing is worse than not being able to achieve a straight line when you need to. Trust me I use mine all the time. I have a feeling this is going to be useful for some of my kid's projects through school in the future as well. This is a NEED!

3. Album / Plastic Protective Sleeves

Before you start on anything you will need to decide what size of album you are going to work with. I went with the largest pages 12"x12". That just happened to be my personal preference. There is no right or wrong here. Most paper comes suited for the largest album but you can always cut to size. Also don't feel like investing in your favourite album is something you have to invest in right now. Currently I am using one I got for free, when I am ready for it to be out on display I will most likely purchase the one that I love at that point. Most albums come with the plastic sleeves but if not you will have to purchase them separately. You also can put more sleeves in your album then the amount it comes with by purchasing the sleeves separately and adding them later.

4. Paper

The cheapest way to buy paper, unless there is a sale going on, is to buy it in a pad. When trying to select a pad to start with choose one where you love 70-80% of the paper. Don't be too concerned if your not in love with every page. You can always use less favoured pages as borders around your photos. The nice part about buying this way is the pad works as a collection, so mixing and matching pages will be done with ease. I also recommend buying some plain pages with no pattern or design. Having this paper will help with balancing your pages and keep them from looking too busy. Maybe as a background or border, or using for typing or writing on, they are very versatile. I went with blushed tones and creams for mine as it paired well with the decorative paper I choose, so just keep that in mind as well. If in doubt just choose a creamy white, it goes with pretty much everything and helps brighten your page up.

5. Double Sided Tape

You can use glue if that is your preference. I find the double sided tape is cleaner. Less likely to sticky your pages up. You can buy pre cut ones or to save a little they also come in a roll and you cut to size. Remember a little goes a long way with this stuff. No need to have tape lining the whole border.

6. Decretive Pieces

Now for the best part! It can be easy to get carried away with the stickers, stamps and all the fun decretive stuff. But try to limit yourself to a few items that inspire you. Maybe a collection of ribbon, metallic tape, sticker collections, a more versatile stamp, or maybe a little card cut out collection. Have fun with it! 

Some of the other things you may need that most people have hanging around their house is are black fine tip pens, scissors, and any momentos like tickets, hospital bracelets, maps, things you have collected or saved in addition to your photos.

Hope you find this list helpful in starting your scrapbook. If you start and you feel like you are missing something here and there, leave some space on your page. You can always add more later. It's harder to take away, than to add something down the road. It's Just A Sprain

If nothing ever happened to my ankle, would I truly be thankful for my ankles? It really puts things into perspective for us doesn't it, when we have something happen to our overall health. You start to wonder how people live every day without a leg or a foot or an arm, and how tricky that would make someone's day to day. I feel blessed looking at my swollen, black and blue ankle, thinking, it could always be worse. I'm blessed that it will heal, and that I have amazing support through family and friends that have helped me or encouraged me through this so far. It's easy to lose sight of all that I have going for me and focus on everything I don't ,and trust me, I have been there too. 

How did I get to this place of thankfulness for my ankles you ask? It was just a regular Thursday morning, regular 5AM wake up call. Nothing out of the ordinary running through my mind. As I head out the door I notice a patch of ice on the sidewalk and I walked around it. Well as it turned out that was not the patch to be weary of because in the blink of an eye I have hit the pavement right there. Upon further inspection, now on the ground, I could see the much thinner clearer ice I had slipped on. I went to stand up, feeling sore but truly did not think it was that bad of a fall. It was then when a massive pain shot up my whole leg. So there I was trying to act as casual as possible sitting on a sidewalk, in the middle of winter, to not attract attention from the on coming traffic passing me on the street and I remember my cell phone so I quickly dialed Rob to come get me.

Ring, ring, ring.. Wow he is taking his sweet time!... ring, ring, ring.. Seriously!?.. ring, ring.. machine. Ok, wow, he didn't pick up! Meanwhile my butt is ensuring no one else would fall on this piece of ice because it has melted. I called him again. Ring, ring, ring... alright panic was setting in ... ring, ring, ring.. OH MY WORD a car is pulling over!.. ring, ring.. Pick up Rob!.. "Hello?".. (Finally).. "I fell!".. "Where?".. "Outside!".. "Where outside?".. .. "right outside the door just please come!".. "Ok bye."

Well as it turned out I knew the man who got out of the car to help me. He goes to our church. "I thought I saw someone on the sidewalk, just thought I would check if you are ok." As I gave him the run down of what happened Rob came outside and they both helped me hop inside to the couch. So yes, 'humiliating' is a good word to sum it all up. 

My mom watched the kids for the next couple of days which really took the major stress off me. I am so thankful for her! Rob was amazing too, being a single parent when getting home from work and taking me to the hospital. It turned out I didn't have any broken bones and it's just a sprain. Sorry to my friend Jessica, who happened to be the x-ray tech, for my unshaved legs. Don't worry I have fixed that since! I still have to see my regular doctor as it's been a week and I am unsure of the protocol from this point forward. It's still really swollen and I still have shooting pain in certain positions so I will have to see what the doctor says. But all and all I am doing a lot better since last week. I had the most embarrassing crutches that were my Dads (in photos attached). They were too tall and I had to stick them out so far on either side. I can't believe I didn't just go out and buy a new pair that fit properly. Probably damaged my arms or shoulders in the process but what can you do. Live and learn. So watch out friends, it's slippery out there!

Winter Blues

Aren't the winter blues supposed to happen later after a long winter? Well, I have been feeling extra blah lately and I have no idea why. Maybe it's the change in weather. Maybe its been the slow progress on our renovations. Maybe it's the additional half hour added to my day dedicated to putting on snow gear. Maybe it's the lack of sun and shorter days getting me down. I'm not totally sure, it could even be a factor of all of thee above. Do you ever feel like this, where you just can't shake the funk? I keep double taking at the calendar thinking my time of the month has to be coming any day now. Anyways, I have been switching some things up to try to encourage and motivate myself!

Self care tends to be something I let go when I am feeling less then fabulous. But I have been making a conscious effort to moisturize, paint my nails and shave my legs. Due to the colder weather these things can be let go, but there is something to be said about doing these little extras that can put a little more pip in your step. 

Lug out the recipe book. I have found switching up my diet with some different twists on the favorites or trying something completely new has really made a difference. The same tired meals over and over never does it for me. Pulling out the crockpot or throw in some Christmas baking here and there. Also, hot drink options are numerous. There are so many teas and hot drink mixes and I have been picking up one new one with groceries these last couple of weeks. It's simple but its been nice, not only for me, but for options when people come over.  I'm just having fun with it. 

Is winter cleaning a thing!? Sometimes the holidays can leave me feeling cluttered. So I have been purging on holiday d├ęcor that I'm not in love with and some of the girls toys that they have grown out of. Putting away all our fall outerwear and replacing it with all the winter gear. Finding the right storage solutions, labeling, organizing all give me a high. What's wrong with me!? I just feel so accomplished tackling these little things.

The last thing I've been doing is limiting my time on social media. Although I love my blog and I love having this outlet, sometimes the promoting feels super overwhelming to me. So, I've decided while I'm in this slump I'm just taking a little more time to myself. Less time on my phone and just hoping by December I will be past this weird phase I am going through. Is it just me or are you guys feeling it too? Let me know what things you do to get you through your blues. I am in no way doing all of these everyday, but one or two of these things a day has really kept me going on the everyday things I absolutely have to do. Photos are a flashback to hot park days in the summer.
